Glashütte Original

Glashütte Original Watches

170 years ago the first master watchmakers settled in Glashütte/Saxony. Over the years, respect for tradition, infinite patience, and incomparable watchmaking expertise have enabled the town’s noted watchmakers to achieve unparalleled success. There is no better expression of these time-honoured values than the Glashütte Original manufactory. The term refers to watchmaking firms that design and manufacture their own movements, and Glashütte Original’s ability to do so places it squarely among the elite of the world’s mechanical watchmakers.

The production of dials is doubtless one of the most difficult tasks involved in making fine mechanical watches. Along with creativity and absolute perfection, the production process requires maximum care and attention to detail. The unique dials used in our manufactory are made in Pforzheim, some 600 km from Glashütte, in our own dial manufactory. Glashütte Original brings the finest in watchmaking traditions together and combines them, under one roof, with the most advanced of contemporary materials and production technologies. In-house design and manufacture of thousands of precision components ensure that each of our exquisite mechanical movements meets the highest possible standards of quality. Each is, after all, a work of art.

The making of a high-end mechanical watch from Glashütte Original begins with a collective brainstorming session. Initial ideas are worked up in the product planning and design department and elaborated using computer-assisted design software. Even a relatively uncomplicated mechanical movement has hundreds of individual components, and Glashütte Original’s watchmakers make use of a broad range of advanced tools and production technologies to make them.

Enormous added value accrues through painstaking aesthetic refinement of the components, which are delicately finished, lavishly engraved and galvanised before a master watchmaker assembles them, patiently and with great precision.

Even the simplest of Glashütte Original movements requires several hours to assemble. More elaborate movements with the most intricate and intriguing of complications – the Senator Chronometer Regulator or the Senator Tourbillon, for example – demand the dedicated attention of a master watchmaker for up to twenty working days.

Following assembly, all Glashütte Original watches are thoroughly examined and tested to ensure they meet the most exacting standards for rate precision, water resistance, shock resistance, and numerous other properties. Only at the end of this rigorous process may a watch from Glashütte Original be considered complete.

Glashütte Original‘s watchmakers and designers have always dedicated a great deal of time to further development and the perfection of their craft. The watch family Art & Technik has its roots in this ongoing effort. The many exciting models and variations reveal in a unique way how a harmonious balance of the traditional and the contemporary can lead to very different aesthetic and functional solutions.

PanoLunarTourbillon

PanoLunarTourbillon

Debuting at Baselworld 2013, the PanoLunarTourbillon takes up the sophisticated new look with a 40 mm case in red gold and a warm silver dial. The characteristic asymmetric design of the Pano timepieces finds the large hour/minute dial positioned to the left of centre, in alignment with the Flying Tourbillon set within it and centred at hour seven. The new model’s Panorama Date display to the lower right presents black numerals on an ivory coloured ground, perfectly matched with the warm silver dial.

Senator Chronometer Regulator

Senator Chronometer Regulator

For the new Senator Chronometer Regulator, Glashütte Original took this special arrangement of the displays and reduced it to a size appropriate for a wristwatch. The dominant central position on the lacquered silver-grainé dial is occupied by the blued minute hand with its polished eye. On the central axis above and below the minute indicator are the smaller hour and seconds displays. Setting the pace at the periphery is a finely drawn minute ring, engraved and galvanised in black, as are the Roman numerals that lie beneath the hour hand’s path.

As different as the watches in the 20th Century Vintage collection may seem at first glance, they share a common characteristic: All models express the unique flair of a special era. The 1960s have left their traces as a time of new ideals; personal and political revolutions turned this decade into an era of self-confidence and creativity. The 1970s have that special “something” that left its mark in art and design. All these influences are reflected in the “Sixties” and “Seventies” models – at the most advanced levels of the art of watchmaking.

Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date

Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date

Glashütte Original introduces the new Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date, the most recent addition to its popular 20th Century Vintage Collection, featuring an entirely new chronograph movement designed and built in the German watchmaker’s manufactory in Glashütte. The Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date debuts at Baselworld 2014 in three versions with dials in galvanized ruthenium, galvanized silver or blue. All three timepieces feature the Seventies collection’s characteristic soft-cornered square stainless steel case and bezel complemented by a range of bracelets in stainless steel, leather and rubber.

Available in two versions, the off-centre hour/minute and subsidiary seconds dials are set against a shining white mother-of-pearl or mystic black dial. A bezel set with 64 clear white diamonds frames the dial, and top-class diamonds indicating the hours encircle the hour and minute display. The elegant moon phase display presents a shining silver moon and stars against a fine-grained silver sky. A silver frame distinguishes the characteristic panorama date, and a 3.0 mm diamond on the crown provides a perfect final touch.
